The 14th Asia-Pacific Physics Conference & the 30th Anniversary of AAPPS

INTRODUCTION
The Institut Fizik Malaysia (Malaysian Institute of Physics) hosted the 14th Asia-Pacific Physics Conference (APPC14) in November 2019. It was the 14th conference in the APPC series and it was organized by the Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies (AAPPS).
For the first time, the conference was organized together with the AAPPS divisions of Plasma Physics (DPP), Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravity (DACG), and Nuclear Physics (DNP).
The scientific objective of APPC14 is to provide a forum for interaction with internationally-renowned researchers in order to stimulate and enhance interest in physics in the Asia Pacific region. The conference was supported by the Asia-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics, the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture, the Sarawak State Government and Top Glove Corporation.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
The scope of APPC14's scientific program covered a wide range of physics, under the following broad disciplines: Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Gravitation (ACG), Atomic, Molecular & Optical Physics (AMO), Condensed Matter, Semiconductor & Materials Physics (CM), Particle Physics (PP), Strongly Correlated Electron Systems (SCES), Optics & Lasers (OL), Synchrotron Radiation (SR), Statistical Physics & Bioinformatics (StatP), Complex Systems, Mathematical Physics & Computational Physics (Complex), Biological and Medical Physics (BioMed), Physics Education (PhysEd), Magnetism & High Magnetic Field (MHM), Nuclear Physics (NP), Plasma Physics (Plasma), Women in Physics (WIP), and Quantum Information (QI). It also incorporated an Asia Oceania Forum for Synchrotron Radiation Research (AOFSRR) mini conference as well as the Women in Physics Group Meeting.
A total of 497 papers (include posters) were presented during the four day conference, which included 14 plenary speakers (H. Mori, Y. K. Hwu, H. W. Yeom, T. Xiang, B. Lembege, K. Midorikawa, J. G. Park, S. Mihara, K. Shibata, L. Chen, T. Nagae, Y. Mizuno, M. Mozetic and Y. S. Hor).
The 497 invited, contributed papers and posters were categorized under the following fields: ACG: 64, AMO: 19, Complex: 21, CM: 59, Plasma: 87, NP:60, PP: 10, SCES: 34, OL: 22, SR: 17, StatP: 12, BioMed: 21, PhysEd: 2, MHM: 12, WIP: 7, QI: 25, and AOFSRR: 11.

INTRODUCTION & 30th AAPPS ANNIVERSARY CEREMONY
The opening ceremony incorporated speeches from Prof. Gui-Lu Long (president of AAPPS), Prof. Seunghwan Kim (chair, International Organizing Committee), Prof. Kuru Ratnavelu (local organizing chair) and Prof. Won Namkung (former president of AAPPS). A special ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of AAPPS in conjunction with the official opening of APPC14 was held, and the events began with the striking of a ceremonial gong from Sarawak.

The conference was a huge success due to coordination by the International Program Committee (chaired by Prof. Hyoung Joon Choi) and the various divisions of AAPPS (DPP, DNP & DACG) as well as the member societies of AAPPS.
More than 520 delegates from 21 countries and regions (Japan, South Korea, China, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Australia, USA, Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Slovenia, Canada, New Zealand, Nepal, Nigeria, Uzbekistan, Germany, Italy, UAE) attended the conference. There were also several exhibitors (AAPPS-APCTP, Springer Nature, IOP Publishing and WinTech Nano-Technology Services Pte. Ltd.) and local cultural vendors as well as the Sarawak Convention Bureau.
After the opening ceremony, the editor-in-chief of the AAPPS Bulletin, T. Motobayashi, outlined the work of the AAPPS Bulletin and its future plans. As there were plans to acquire a Science Citation Index listing for the Bulletin in the next few years, he encouraged delegates to contribute to the journal.
Conference Dinner
The conference dinner was held on November 20, 2019 at the Hilton Kuching Ballroom. The highlights of the conference dinner were the award ceremonies for both the 3rd AAPPS-DPP S. Chandrasekhar Prize to the joint winners Prof. K. Shibata and Prof. L. Chen, as well as to the winners of the AAPPS-APCTP 8th C.N. Yang Award, Prof. I. Aharonovich, Prof. X. J. Liu, and Prof. S. He.

Another interesting highlight of the conference dinner was the performance by the Sarawak Cultural Troupe. They entertained the delegates with their traditional dances and encouraged many delegates to participate in their dances.
We look forward to seeing participants, both old and new, at the 15th APPC, which will be held in Gyeongju, Korea in 2022.
